A vita több résztvevője megerősítette: a Gyurcsány-kormány, miközben a látványpolitizálás jegyében kinevezett egyetlen meleg államtitkárt, következetesen megakadályozta meleg szakemberek kinevezését, kizárólag meleg identitásuk miatt.</desc>
<desc-eng>The society’s response toward gays has undergone a complete transformation. Indeed, this change, an important and positive effect of Hungary’s accession to the EU, was not unexpected. What is more difficult to explain is that this positive change is not mirrored in the self-image of the gays themselves. In the fragmented gay society, common values and the promotion of legal protections are becoming empty phrases.

This strange phenomenon is characteristic of Eastern Europe, where social developments are poorly articulated and out of sync with European norms. As a rule, society does not know what to do with itself and has difficulty in dealing with the problems of its own European identity (for example, the advance of nationalism, anti-EU sentiments, the rise of far-right movements). Gay society is no exception – in such a context, one cannot expect gays to react positively to problems rooted in a broader social crisis.

At the same time gays represent a minority that tends to be more mobile than the majority population and can adapt easier to new situations. Many leading figures of Hungary’s gay society have emigrated to the West – to London, to Paris, and most of all to Berlin – so their earlier influence on the situation in Hungary has diminished or disappeared. As for the gay segment of Hungary’s economically successful class, they have cocooned themselves in their own sub-culture, paying little attention to developments in the larger society.

A series of interviews with gay persons point out that gays in Hungary whose economic situation is stagnant or declining generally support the parties of the Right, that is, Fidesz – even though Fidesz has been antagonistic to the gay sub-culture.

The growing support for Hungary’s far-right poses a danger to gays. The debate recalled the atrocities that disrupted last year’s Gay Pride parade in Budapest, and that the (essentially fascist) Jobbik party, which in a recent election gained enough votes to send three representatives to the EU, has already signaled that opposition to this year’s Gay Pride could well be violent. In view of this situation it is difficult to understand why gays have become passive and act as though their rights are not under threat.

Several participants concurred: the Gyurcsány government, even while pointing to the single token gay appointed as a State Secretary, consistently blocked the appointment of gay professionals to political office, solely because of their gay identity. </desc-eng>
