<desc-eng>The U.S. presidential elections have brought about a greatly changed situation whose dramatic potential is not limited to the United States. Western and Eastern Europe each reacted quite differently to the election of Barack Obama. While West Europeans, hoping for a quick end to the ongoing political crisis, expect the new Administration to enact effective new measures, the political and economic elites in Eastern Europe fear that the new Administration will pay less attention to this region’s particular interests, with less assistance available for strengthening internal democracy and no special security guarantees against the threats represented by Russia (attempts at regional hegemony, energy monopoly).

At a roundtable discussion organized by the Republikon Institute – Centre of Foreign Policy, experts from several countries in Eastern Europe concurred that most of the region’s problems stem from the fact that local elites have always over-emphasized external factors as conditions for domestic political stability. Several commentators noted that Eastern Europe’s diminished importance in global politics might now impel the current elites to take greater responsibility for their countries’ fate. At the same time, most of the participants also agreed that Russia’s increasing economic, political or military influence would be contrary to the interests of both the European Union and the U.S. A united stance regarding Russia must and will be characterized by greater transatlantic and East-West cooperation. Today, Moscow’s moves toward hegemony are met with a united response by the European continent, to a much greater extent than even six months ago.

At the same time, participants called attention to the dangerous, paternalistic tendency by certain countries to respond to today’s challenges with an excessive concentration of political and economic powers. Intellectuals in all these countries ought to step up their critique of this tendency.

In Hungary, the government is theoretically committed to the liberalization of the economy, but fails to carry this out consistently. Unfortunately, the current crisis may further sap the government’s commitment to real economic reforms.</desc-eng>
