<desc-eng>Asia is entering the 21st century international system led by two emerging superpowers. Yet India and China represent two fundamentally different systems, both of which are potentially attractive to many countries of the so-called Third World. China is a single-party system, whose society is a contradictory combination of a liberalizing economy and a centrally planned, directive-based leadership. India is often called the “world’s largest democracy,” though it is clear that Indian society does not comply in every respect with Western democratic norms. But both countries will be the key factors in global development in the coming decades. This roundtable-discussion focused on lessons for the new international order.</desc-eng>
